- Become more aware of how you interact with boys and girls.
- Assess what kind of expectations you set for girls; set equal standards.
- Look for stereotypes you may act out that reinforce harmful cultural norms.
- Discuss gender biases openly with students; see what ideas they may have for bridging the divide.
- Explore career options with gender in mind, and discuss how there does not have to be "guy" vs. "girl" jobs.
- Introduce key women who have influenced the Computer Sciences.
- Ensure that your colleagues become cognizant of digital inequities.
J. Sanders (2005), an educator and advocate for gender equity found that in one of her studies where a teacher actively discussed gender:
The girls in the classes where he had happened to mention the gender equity
project were less likely to tolerate interruptions from boys and more likely to
trust their own abilities. Boys, similarly, learned to be less dominating, also a
good lesson. (p. 12)
